Alvern Letcher, 88, was born to Charley and Elsie (Peters) Letcher on Sept 16, 1933. The middle of seven siblings- Marilyn, Aldean, Gerald, Alvern, Joan, Charlyn, and Loreen- in rural Sheridan County. Born in his Uncle Leonard's house and the river was flooding so bad that the doctor almost didn't make it to the house in time
He attended Riverview elementary school and Hay Springs High School. After graduating in 1951 he entered the Army and served in the Triple Nickle Artillery Battlion for two years while serving in Korea.
After returning from the service he started farming on Mirage Flats and continued until his retirement.
In 1955 he married Corraine Jacobs and to this union four children were born- Randy, Valora, Lyndall and Vern.
He took flying lessons and this was his dream hobby, soaring the skies, and the neighbors learned to duck when they heard the plane as it was buzzing them. He dealt for several year at the Stag and Stagette in Hay Springs. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion. In his spare time Alvern enjoyed playing cards, hunting and reading. A daily cribbage game was always played to see who had to get the mail- but was it the winner or the loser? Sundays always included a "friendly" poker game with the siblings.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, daughter Valora (daughter Amberleigh) Hammond, son Lyndall (sons Tanner and Drew), daughter-in-love Jodi, daughter-in-law Camy (daughter Desi (son Evan) Davison and Alex (wife Amanda and sons Finley and Ford)) Letcher, and daughter-in-law Shiela (sons Bryce, Nate (wife Erica and son Link) and Hunter and daughter Tauna) Letcher, and sister-in-law Donna (Bob) House. Brother Gerald and sisters Charlyn and Loreen and many nieces and nephews and extended families.
Alvern was preceded in death by his parents, sons Randy and Vern, daughter-in-law Karla, grandson Evan, and sisters Marilyn and Aldean.
Inurnment will be at Sacred Heart Church, Mirage Flats at a later date.
