Audrey J. Benedickt, age 93, of Gordon, Nebraska died on March 5, 2019 at Gordon Memorial Hospital. Audrey was born June 5, 1925 at Gordon, to Arthur Coon and Jean Park Coon. She spent her grade school years in rural country schools. She graduated from Gordon High School in 1943.
Audrey married Jim Benedickt on January 26, 1946. Their life together brought them four children: Mike, Kirk, Susan and Kathy. The family made their home north of Kyle, SD, where they were involved in ranching.
Mom was Dad’s hired hand much of the time on the ranch and when she was not outside helping, she was cooking for all of us including whoever else was there helping. Mom loved cooking and she was a very good cook. She was very devoted and involved in her children’s lives. There was nothing more important in Mom’s life than FAMILY. During the school year Mom would be in town with us kids. Dad would stay out on the ranch; we would go home on weekends, holidays and in the summer.
Mom always had a big garden and canned most of the summer. Mom was active in the catholic church, both in Kyle and in Gordon.
In 1990 Dad and Mom along with Dad’s girls (his cows) moved to Gordon where Dad continued to ranch for several more years. Mom went to almost all of the grandkid’s activities. She was an active member in St. Leo’s Altar Society helping with whatever needed to be done. She would fix lunches for her grandkids and their friends. They would call her in the morning before school and ask her what was for lunch, she so loved cooking for them, both her and Dad enjoyed having them at their table to hear all the things that were going on in school and their lives. You never went to Mom’s house when she was not baking or cooking something.
Audrey is survived by brother Don Coon, daughter Susan Wallace, son Mike and Joyce Benedickt, son-in-law Steve Mohr, daughter-in-law Wrayanne Shannon; 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Jim, parents Arthur and Jean Coon, sister Doris, son Kirk Benedickt, daughter Kathy Mohr, daughter-in-law Colleen Benedickt and son-in-law Tom Wallace.
