Berta Grover

Berta Marie Grover passed away on March 2nd, 2022, at Nye Legacy in Fremont, NE at the age of 93.  Berta was born on June 13th, 1928, in Mutual Oklahoma to Claud and Irene Lynes.

Berta was the oldest of 9 children. She attended school in Vici, Oklahoma, and graduated salutatorian of her class in 1946.  Berta’s cousin, Lloyd Lynes was in the Army during WWII in the same unit as Fred Grover.  Berta and Fred started communicating through letters until Fred came home after being discharged.  Shortly after, Fred and Berta were married on June 20th,1947 in Woodward Oklahoma.  Berta moved with Fred to the sandhills of Nebraska.  To this union two children were born, Marsha Irene was born on Oct 13th,1956 and Bruce Eugene was born on Nov 27th, 1960.

While living in the sandhills Berta and Fred lived on a ranch where she learned to drive trucks and tractors.  After Marsha was born, Fred moved the family to Gordon where Berta was a bookkeeper for Fred’s Enco Service Station. Here she helped Fred change oil, fix tires and do odds and ends.  Fred passed away unexpectedly on Jan 29th, 1978.  Berta continued to work as a bookkeeper for different companies through the years.  She worked for Sheridan Dairy and Farmers Co-op in Gordon.

Berta enjoyed gardening, quilting, crafting, puzzle books and spending time with her grandchildren.  She was a spunky and stubborn woman but very caring and loving.  Berta was an active member of Wellspring Chapel in Gordon before moving to Fremont Ne, where she lived the last 4 years to be close to family.

Berta was preceded in death by her husband, Fred, parents, Claud and Irene, brothers Alvin, Jesse and Bill Lynes, and sister Gladys Hixson.

Survivors include her daughter Marsha (Leon) Dukat, Palmer, NE; son Bruce (Diana) Grover, Rapid City, SD. Grandchildren Shawnda Carmichael, Bison SD; Rebecca VanPelt, Fremont NE, Shelley Woods, Cheyenne WY; Christina Cupil, Rapid City SD; Stephanie Grover, Rapid City, SD; Nicholas Dukat, Lincoln NE; Kyle Grover, Rapid City, SD; and Jordan Grover, Rapid City, SD, 14 great-grandchildren. Also sisters Helen Kennedy, Vici OK; Ila (Jim) Fothergill, Woodward OK, brothers Dennis (Carolyn) Lynes, Woodward OK; Larry (Arlinda) Lynes, Taloga, OK, and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 12, 2022, at 1030 am at Wellspring Chapel in Gordon, NE.  Burial will be at the Gordon Cemetery following funeral services.  Luncheon will follow at Wellspring Church.
