Donald Frederick Burrows

Donald Burrows, 91, passed away peacefully at his nephew’s home in Hay Springs, Nebraska on August 24, 2024.

He was born December 16, 1932, in Hay Springs, Nebraska. Don was the second son of Milton and Lois (Wells) Burrows. Don attended Banner Grade School in Hay Springs & graduated from a private high school in Kansas in 1951.

Don was a farmer and fix-it man from the beginning; always taking apart and putting things back together even as a young child. Shortly after graduation he spent several years in California & Wyoming working on airplanes & helicopters eventually to return home to Hay Springs & work on the farm for the rest of his life. During his time farming he was able to work closely with his dad, Milton, his brothers Bob & Max, his nephews Ken & Gerry, & Great-Nephew Max. When he wasn’t working on the farm, he enjoyed spending time with his nieces & nephews, taking them on tractor rides, motorbike rides, & telling them stories of the farm. He also enjoyed spending time watching the Andy Griffith Show & Gunsmoke. Don had a love for planes. He and his brother, Bob, loved flying their airplane around the Sandhills & into South Dakota. He would often crop dust for farmers in South Dakota.

Don never married; however, he is survived by many close loved ones. His love is felt through many generations of nieces, nephews and other extended family members. He is preceded in death by his parents, Milton & Lois, & his three brothers, Bob, Max, & John.

A service of remembrance will be held at 10:00 am Friday September 13, 2024, at Chamberlain Chapel in Chadron, Nebraska. Interment will follow at the Hay Springs Cemetery & a reception to celebrate Don’s life will be held at the Assumption Arena in Chadron following the interment.

To celebrate Don’s lifelong commitment to the town of Hay Springs, in lieu of flowers the family has established a donation fund for the Hay Springs Fire Department & Hay Springs American Legion.

Services will be live-streamed from Chamberlain Chapel’s Facebook page.
