Floyd Joseph Serres passed away March 22, 2026 in Crawford, Nebraska, at 90 years of age. Floyd was the second of eight children born to Peter Paul Serres and Eva (Barrett) Serres. He was born November 20, 1935 on the Serres Ranch located near Montrose, Nebraska. He attended a one room school in the area, and was raised and confirmed in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church at Montrose.
Floyd worked on the family ranch until he joined the U. S. Army on February 19, 1959. He served in Korea, and was able to return home on February 9, 1961 upon his discharge. One of the highlights of Floyd’s life was his opportunity to participate in the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. in 2019. He treasured the Quilt of Valor given to him at the start of the Flight, and the recognition and appreciation given to the veterans as they traveled.
After serving in the military, Floyd returned to Nebraska and worked at the Nebraska Beef Research Station located at Fort Robinson. He also met Karen Kay Corbin, and they married on May 29, 1963. This was a long happy union for Karen and Floyd. They shared life for nearly 55 years, working, building a home for their family, and traveling with friends and family, until Karen’s passing in 2018. They were blessed with three sons, Larry Paul Serres, Neal Clayton Serres and Casey Lee Serres.
Floyd was a familiar face in the badlands and gumbo in northern Dawes and Sioux Counties. He served as range rider for the Sugarloaf Grazing Association on the Oglala National Grassland for 56 years and traveled over 10,000 miles every summer on the Grassland checking livestock, monitoring pastures, and installing or repairing range structures and pipelines. He retired in 2021 at the young age of 85! Floyd also spent many years as a pin back hand at the Crawford Livestock market on Friday sale days.
Floyd was a wonderful son, husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. He was a faithful, active member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Crawford, a member and supporter of the Crawford American Legion, a board member for Old West Trail Rodeo, including a stint as President, and was a member of Crawford Eagles Club. He enjoyed watching his sons’ school and sports activities, and his grandchildren and extended family always loved being with him.
Floyd was preceded in death by his wife, Karen Kay Serres; his parents, Peter Paul Serres and Eva Serres; great grandson, Case; his brother, Eugene Paul Serres and wife, Patricia Serres; brother, Joseph Henry Serres; sister, Eileen Evelyn Anderson; brothers-in-law, LaMoyne Hall (Helen) and Duane Lewis (Edna). He was also preceded in death by his parents in law Catherine Leetch and Alvia Leetch; sister-in-law, Shirley Deichert and her husband, Anthony Deichert; brother-in-law, Bruce Corbin and his wife, Joann Corbin; and brother-in-law, Bryan Sanford.
Survived by sons, Larry Paul (Debra) Serres; Neal Clayton Serres; and Casey Lee (Nancy) Serres; his grandchildren, Bryant, Brittany, Clint, Cody, Clayton, Mitch, Amanda, and Mackenzie; great grandchildren: Linlee, Brecken, Weldon, Ryder, Oakley, Billy and Josey; his sisters, Mary Loretta (Joe) Hahn and Helen Theresa Hall; sister-in-law, Jackie Serres; brother, George Leslie (Rebecca) Serres; Edna Eva Lewis; and his sister-in-law, Janice (Darold) German.
Floyd never knew a stranger, and he will not only be missed by his large family, but by many, many friends.
A memorial has been established for the Crawford Volunteer Fire Dept, Crawford American Legion, or Ponderosa Villa.
