George John Darr, 66, passed away at his home in Hay Springs NE on April 17th, 2014. George was born on July 31st, 1947 to John Wade Darr and Angeline (Brown) Darr in Greeley CO. The son of an Air Force Lt. Colonel George traveled the US extensively. An Army Captain himself George also had the opportunity to live in various parts of the world but truly felt as though he'd come home when he and his wife moved to Hay Springs in 2002. George loved his time in the Army, having spent time as a tank company commander in Korea before marrying the love of his life Claire Shogrin on December 28th, 1973. George had a vast number of interests including being an avid storyteller, a wonderful cook, restoring old cars and building models. At the time of his passing, he was in the process of recreating his entire battalion from Korea. He had also recently finished restoration of an Opel GT, which he had originally purchased while stationed in Germany, as well as a 1965 Pontiac. George was also an avid gardener, eagerly looking forward to spring when he could start the next batch of seeds. Survivors include his wife and best friend of 40 years Claire Shogrin, younger brother Steve Darr, only daughter Alexis Richardson and her husband Jeff Richardson and their three children; Erika, Kelan and Kalika. He is also survived by Erika's father Steve Buckner, his wife Meredith and their three children; Madalane, Kaitlyn and Rachael. George is also survived by his dogs Nitro and Roscoe. He was preceeded in death by his parents. Services will be held April 22nd, 2014 at the family home in Hay Springs, at 1PM, with Richard McKay officiating. Potluck lunch reception/celebration of life will follow. Cremation has taken place however honorary pallbearers include Jeff Richardson, Steve Buckner, Bob Starr, Clint Phillips and Rodney Scherbarth. The family request memorial contributions be made in George's name to The National Wounded Warrior Project or the Northwest Nebraska Humane Society. Memorials may be made in care of Chamberlain Drabbels Funeral Home, P.O. Box 443, Hay Springs, Nebraska 69347.
