Gregg Allen Claussen 68, of Martin, SD, died Monday, February 16 at Bennett County Hospital.

He was born on November 26, 1957 in Martin, SD to Robert and Shirley Claussen. He attended and graduated from at Bennett County High School in Martin, SD. After high school he attended college at Mitchell Technical Institute in Mitchell, SD where he graduated with an associate degree in Electrical Construction Maintenance.

He later married Kathy Fralick and to this union their son Brandon was born. On October 4, 1986 he married Judi Matteson and to their union was sons Trent, Shelby, and daughter Chelsi.

Gregg dedicated a portion of his professional life to running and operating Claussen Electric in Martin, SD. His commitment to his work and his community was evident during this period, as he provided valuable electrical services to the area. Later, Gregg transitioned to a new role with Golden West Telecommunications, where he continued to contribute his skills and knowledge to the community for several years until he retired.

In addition to his professional endeavors, Gregg was actively involved in supporting youth activities. When his children were young, he volunteered as a little league baseball coach, sharing his time and enthusiasm to help guide and mentor young players. He was also a long time member of the Martin City Council

He later served as an EVOC driver for the Bennett County Ambulance Service, where he provided strong support to all emergency personnel and first responders and helped many people in this role.

Gregg had a passion for classic cars, with a special fondness for his 1969 Ford Mustang. He would drive his mustang to Deadwood, SD during the Deadwood Cool Nights and was always in awe of the antique and classic cars. He also enjoyed cheering for his childhood football team, the Detroit Lions. Spending time outdoors was important to him, and he found great joy in camping and kayaking. Gregg’s love for Siberian huskies was evident with his dog Jypsy was always by his side, accompanying him wherever he went.

He treasured moments spent with his grandchildren, delighting them with amusing stories, playing games, and taking them on adventures to the Black Hills.

Gregg had a deep appreciation for old antiques, and this passion was evident in how he surrounded himself with his collection. He thoughtfully arranged these antiques in various places, including his yard, his home and his shop. Each item was carefully displayed, reflecting his love for history and craftsmanship, and contributing to the distinctive character of his living and working spaces.

Gregg was known throughout his neighborhood for his willingness to help others, especially during the harsh winter months.

Music played a significant role in Gregg’s life, and he enjoyed playing his bass guitar. Independence Day was his favorite holiday. He shared his enthusiasm for the occasion every year on the 4th of July by organizing an impressive fireworks display for his neighborhood. He was always generous in his celebrations.

He is survived by his wife, Judi Claussen, Martin, SD, son Brandon (Kelli) Claussen, Lubbock, TX, son Trent Deines, Martin, SD, daughter Chelsi (Brent) Weber, Martin, SD, son Shelby (Laura) Claussen, Colorado Springs, CO, seven grandchildren, Kenedi, Drew, Kambri, Kambel, Cralynn, Hadley, Kailor, his mother Shirley Claussen, Martin, SD, sister Deb Soderlin, Rapid City, brother Steve Claussen, Martin, SD, niece Shannon (Aaron) Brown, Rapid City, SD, nephew Brett (Kelly) Soderlin, Rapid City, SD, niece Brittney Soderlin, Martin, SD nephew Shea Soderlin, Sioux Falls, SD and nieces Stevi and Samantha Claussen, Martin, SD

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert A. Claussen

Visitation will be from 5-7PM Monday February, 23 at the Bennett County Funeral Home/Service.

Services will be held at 2:00 PM at the Lindsey Memorial Presbyterian Church in Martin, SD with Pastor Lisa Danielson officiating. Burial will follow at the Martin Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Norman Tallman, Charlie Matteson, Brett Soderlin, Shea Soderlin, Brent Weber, Jan Greg, Layne Saxton and Robert Fogg.
