Harmon Henry Smith was born on Mirage Flats August 7, 1920 to Danish immigrants Carl and Anne Smith. Three sisters Norma, Betty and Annebell completed the Smith Family. Harmon's father was struck by lighting and killed the morning of May 26th, 1926 leaving Anne with four small children and a pioneer farm to run. Harmon graduated from Hay Springs High school in 1938 and then went to the University of Nebraska Agricultural College. In 1944 Harmon joined the Air Force serving in Okinawa, Japan trained as an aviation mechanic through 1946. Harmon returned to the Mirage Flats farm in 1947 and married Eileen Lang Smith. Eileen, daughter of Herbert and Elma Lang is a part of the local Danish Hermansen and Jensen families. Harmon and Eileen continued to live on the farm for 44 years raising three children, Bridget Ellen born during the blizzard of 1949, Sydney Anne 1951 and Carl Harmon, 1958. Harmon and Eileen retired and moved to Chadron Nebraska in 1991 eventually selling their Flats farm and Ranch along the Niobrara River. They moved to Prairie Pine Lodge in 2005, then to Pioneer Manor in Hay Springs in 2013 where they resided until Harmon's death on April 30, 2014 at age 93. Harmon is survived by his wife of 67 years Eileen Lang Smith; his children Bridget Laue (Paul Sharp) of Scotland, Sydney (Tim) Fortune of Virginia and Carl "Dane" Smith (Andrew Rust) of California; his grandchildren Ryan Laue (Nohem�½_ Salazar) of California, Sheree (Troy) Wilt of Kansas, Justin (Everly) Laue of Colorado, Scott Sheneman of Virginia and Jeremy Laue (Katie MacDonald) of Colorado; great-grandchildren Alyssa Laue, Jordyn Wilt, Aria Laue, Jared Wilt and Arawyn Laue. Harmon is also survived by sisters Betty (Les) Wilkes of California and Annebell (Ardean) Andersen of Nebraska.
