Karl A. Witt was born on July 29, 1964 in Kremmling, CO to Sharon and Charles Junior Witt. Karl joined older siblings-Kim, Kelli, Mark and Levi Witt.
Their family moved east of Hay Springs, NE around 1976 and Karl attended country school in 7th and 8th grade, but he transferred to Rushville High School as a freshman. He attended school there all 4 years and participated in all sports- baseball, basketball, football and track. He was very athletic and still held the rebound record at Rushville High School.
Karl was a great student and was in National Honor Society. He graduated in 1982 at age 17. He obtained a football scholarship to Doane College which he attended for 1 year before injuring his legs.
His mother had suffered a stroke at this time, so Karl decided to return home to help his mother and to help care for Casey Witt, his nephew. Sharon recovered in 1987, and she and Casey moved to Chadron for employment and specialized needs for Casey.
Karl had moved to Colorado for a construction job around that time. From there he moved to California for another construction job refurbishing older motels. After injuring his back, Karl returned to Chadron, NE to rest and recuperate. He was always active in sports and met his future wife, Luanne Horse, playing recreational softball in Rushville in 1988. Their love of sports sealed their relationship, and they played softball, volleyball and golf together after that.
Karl found employment with Orville Dau at Dau’s Plumbing in Chadron. He worked there for 2 years. In 1990 Karl applied at Nebraska Dept. of Roads in their Maintenance Office. He worked there for several years learning their duties, but he eventually transferred to the construction office where he learned valuable information on surveying bridges, drainage, etc. He soon became a Tech IV worker.
Karl learned of a Supervisor Position opening up in maintenance, so he applied and was selected. Paul Howard was superintendent and Karl worked under Paul, who mentored Karl until Paul’s untimely death May 27, 2021.
Karl applied for the Superintendent position and was selected for district 5 in June of 2021. He held that position but was diagnosed with Metastatic Colon Cancer in September of 2022. Karl kept working throughout all treatments until September of 2025. He was put on Hospice care in late August but worked as his health allowed until around September 10th. His condition weakened but he played 9 holes of golf on September 13th with dear friends Neil, Ephraim and Chris Brafford.
Survivors include wife Luanne, Mother Sharon Singley of Hastings, NE brother Mark (Shale) Witt and niece Kendra and Rochelle Witt of Boise ID nephew Casey (Josephine) Witt, niece Mikayla Kolodjay of Alliance, NE and Karl’s cat- Stoogie & Figaro.
