Khamphao Sayaloune, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on June 24, 2026, surrounded by his devoted family. He was born on May 10, 1939, in Vientiane, Laos, and lived a life defined by love, dedication, and warmth after escaping Communist rule.
Khamphao served as a high school principal and French teacher. In addition to his native language, he spoke multiple languages. In 1979, he escaped to Thailand, where he was detained by Thai authorities and placed in a refugee camp. From there, he planned and succeeded in helping his family escape from Laos. With the support of a sponsorship program, Khamphao and his family came to the United States in 1980 and settled in Nebraska.
He worked for Pine Ridge Job Corps for a number of years, farmed pigs east of Chadron as a self‑employed small business owner, and later was employed at Crestview Care Center until his retirement. Loyal to his children above all, he raised them to be responsible, respectful, and full of integrity. To his children, Khamphao was their hero—a word they do not use lightly.
For 63 years, he shared a beautiful life with his wife, Mouane, who passed away approximately nine months ago. Together, they built a strong and loving family, setting an enduring example of devotion, integrity, and togetherness.
Khamphao is survived by his nine children: Damdouane, Manonam, Phetmany, Malaysy, Malychanh, Malychone, Thavivone, Voradeth, and Detsinh; and by their spouses, whom he welcomed fully into his heart and home. His legacy continues through his 32 grandchildren and 34 great‑grandchildren, each of whom brought him joy and carry forward his spirit.
He was known for his kindness, generosity, and integrity toward all who were fortunate to know him. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mouane, and his eldest grandson, Duane Sayaloune.
A private family service will be held on Monday, June 29, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Chamberlain Chapel. Cremation will follow in Sturgis, and a celebration of Khamphao’s life will be held that evening at the family farm.
