Larry M. Swick, 88, of Batesland, South Dakota, passed away August 23, 2021, in Rapid City, South Dakota, from kidney failure.
Larry was born on November 11, 1932, in Clinton, Nebraska to Raleigh and Emma (Hoppe) Swick. He is survived by Betty (Meador), his wife for 59 years, daughter Laurie, sons: Adam (Bekah), Raleigh, Andrew (Mona), Nathan (Lori). His grandchildren include Miranda, Ally, Jacob, Ramy, and Salma. Larry is also survived by his brother, Loren, of Greeley, Colorado.
Larry was a proud physical therapist and worked for 41 years in San Francisco, California, and the surrounding areas of Gordon, Nebraska, and Martin, South Dakota. When Larry wasn't practicing therapy, he usually spent his time working on the farm located on the Pine Ridge Indian reservation. “Bone Bender” was the CB handle Larry used to reflect his occupation.
Larry enjoyed the outdoors with his family, including hunting pheasants and fishing on the farm, and camping in the Black Hills. He loved his classic car and shotgun collections. In the winter, Larry enjoyed reading autobiographies.
In his retirement, Larry and Betty ran a bed and breakfast, Wakpamni Bed and Breakfast. The farm was visited by many international guests who enjoyed Larry’s humorous stories at the breakfast table.
As a father, Larry was a role model for individuality and education. He served on the Shannon County school board for many years.
Larry was a thespian and entertainer, had a great sense of humor, and was a friend to many in the surrounding area. He was honorably named Oyate Wač Inyanpi (people depend on him) by the Lakota Sioux Tribe. Larry was a member of the United Methodist Church of Gordon and was an active Mason/Shriner for 66 years.
In place of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Gordon United Methodist Church.
