Leonard M. Smith’s life journey here on earth was released to our loving, gracious Lord on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at his home.
Leonard was born on July 26th, 1953, in Rushville, NE, to Leaven and Margaret (Moser) Smith, both from Creighton, Nebraska area.
Leonard attended grade school at rural district #56, attended and graduated from Hay Springs High in 1971. Here is where he met Linda (Kleensand), who became his best friend and life partner of 53 years on September 30th 1973. He was able to love Linda for who she was, dismissing the baggage included in the deal. Joining this joint venture were four children: Lucas, Jaclyn, Sarah, and Lynden.
He had a wise beyond years presence carried with because he was grasping knowledge, acquired by taking care of his family while his father's health struggles continued. He would share his thoughts if he wished to pick his brain!
He treasured his lessons learned and time spent learning farming and AG practices from his dad he always said that he had been robbed by the early life loss of his father. He was told he would have to work harder and do more to succeed! He always prided himself in treating others how he would want to be treated. A handshake and word of mouth, the deal was done! Linda would question some decision and would get I have an Angel leading me!
Leonard took pride in raising good crops, but livestock was his passion, after raising hogs farrow to finish for 23 years, saying they stink but paid the bills! Having cattle around as stockers and yearlings. He enjoyed feeding and watching the cattle grow! Linda got him hooked on the cow/calf side, which slid into AI and raising breeding stock. The love of watching them grow led to feeding for the grid. He enjoyed the beauty carried by the finished animal!
He did not have many hobbies, the family life he was privileged to have, reading a good factual history book, finished some but would rather have a cookout and be the chef at the lake while enjoying just being. Going to bull sales and seeing new ranch operations was always a highlight and enjoying the scenery along the way! Discovering a new restaurant and trying new dishes! Watching the grandkids play sports was the BEST! Going to a ROCKIES game! Watching and going to horse races was something enjoyed with a group of old friends! If someone needed a helping hand, he would be the one to offer! Leonard did many behind the scenes good deeds not for a pat on the back, or acknowledgement, but because he and God knew it was right!
Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, Leaven and Margaret, brother, Dale, brother-in-law, Gaylon Kelly and Curt Ginn.
Missing him and being held forever in our hearts are his wife, Linda, furry friends, Elsie & Rose, Sons, Lucas, Lynden (Alisa), daughters, Jaclyn, and Sarah (John). Grandchildren, Jazlyn (Austin), Laney (Thia and Henry), Breely, Lex, Talan, Evan, and Milo. Sisters, Dorris Ginn, Maxine (Art) Scott, and Joyce Kelly, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, and friends. Leonard was blessed with holding his Great Grandson, Henry! He and several of his friends called each other Brother, very valued friendships! All held closely in his heart.
A celebration of life service is being planned, in the future.
