Mary Mel Vetter

April 13, 1958 — November 6, 2025

Mary Mel Vetter, beloved mother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully at home in Chadron, Nebraska, on November 6, 2025, at the age of 67, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born to Herbert and Melba (Swallow) Vetter in Chadron, Nebraska, Mary was the third of six children. Her early years were spent on a farm in Minatare, where she developed a deep appreciation for nature and family. The family later returned to Chadron, where Mary attended Assumption Academy and proudly graduated from Chadron High School.

In 1979, Mary embarked on a new adventure, moving to Bermuda. There, she met Stephen Henson, a sailor in the U.S. Navy. Together, they welcomed two children, Deja and Graeme. The family’s journey continued with moves to Rota, Spain, and Groton, Connecticut, where they welcomed their youngest son, Raymond. After Stephen’s retirement, they settled in Reynoldsburg, Ohio.

Following their divorce, Mary returned to Chadron, where she devoted herself to caring for her family, especially her grandchildren, bringing joy and warmth to their lives.

Mary is predeceased by her parents, Melba and Herbert Vetter, and her sisters Julie, Jana, and Andrea. She is survived by her brothers, Martin and Benny, her cherished children: Deja (Clay Andersen), Graeme Henson, and Raymond (Breanna) Henson, as well as nine grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

A private service will be held at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Chadron on Tuesday, November 11. Arrangements are under the care of Chamberlain Chapel.

Flowers and condolences may be sent to Chamberlain Chapel in Chadron.
