OPAL NIELSON Opal Edith Nielson, age 95, went home to be with her Lord on October 10, 2014 at Gordon Hospital . She was born October 12, 1919 in Rushville, NE to George Albert and Freida Ostrander. She attended grade school in the Gordon Valley School in the Sandhills and graduated high school from Rushville, NE. While on the ranch she helped her parents with milking the cows and cleaning the separator and milk buckets as well as gardening. On October 6, 1943 she married John Nielson. For 61 years the couple owned and lived on a ranch in Survey Valley north of Ashby, NE until March 2004, when they moved to Countryside Care in Gordon. Opal accepted Christ as her Savior at a young peoples conference at Chadon State Park and saw to it that her children attended Survey Valley Sunday School, meeting in homes, until Pleasant Point Church was built and then began attending there. She was as member of the Soapweed Suzies, a local women's group and also participated in the auxiliary at Pleasant Point. One of her passions were her flowers, especially violets. She was humble in that she was a fantastic seamstress, cook and hostess but she didn't believe she was. She supported her husband through all the ups and downs of ranch life and thoroughly enjoyed raising her children. When the rural school closed she took the children to Gordon on Monday mornings and went back to the ranch on Friday night from 1962 to 1971. During most of that time she was a waitress at Otto and Mickey's. Opal was devoted to her family and was an example to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Survivors include her three sons, Marvin ( Kathy), of Whitney, Jonathan (Trenda) of Ellsworth, Malcolm (Cindy) of Ellsworth, one daughter Rowena (Dennis) Beck of Rosemount, MN.
