Wayne Speer

Wayne Donovan Speer, 83, of Chadron, NE died Wednesday, May 14 at Regional West Medical Center Scottsbluff, NE. He was born December 14th, 1930 in Alliance, NE to Homer and Stella Speer. Wayne grew up on a ranch 17 miles North of Lakeside and graduated from Rushville High School in 1948. On August 31, 1952, Wayne married Patricia Talbot of Rushville, NE. To this union three children were born, Neil Allan, Rebecca Jo, and Tracy Ann. He served in the United States Air Force from Jan 1951 to Jan 1955 when he was honorably discharged. Wayne returned to the family ranch in Lakeside, NE, where he continued to ranch for the next 51 years. He retired from ranching in 2006 and moved to Chadron, NE. Wayne was a member of Chadron United Methodist Church, Life member of the American Legion, and Elks. He enjoyed bowling, golfing, training horses, and raising cattle. He knew no strangers and was friends with everyone he met, always willing to help out. Preceding him in death are his parents Homer & Stella Speer and brother-in-law Tom Vandel. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Patricia; one son Neil A. Speer of North Platte, NE; two daughters, Rebecca (Ray) Oltman of Glendale, AZ; Tracy (Doug) Hoff of Loveland, CO; one grandson Corey (Bridget) Oltman of Glendale, AZ; one great-granddaughter, one step-granddaughter, three step great-grandchildren; one brother Larry Speer of Lincoln, NE; and one sister Norma Vandel of Naperville, IL.
