Originally from Cayuga, North Dakota, Bill was a true free spirit, known for his love of adventure and candid nature. In 1955, he proudly joined the United States Marine Corps, later re-enlisting in 1963 to continue his service.
A lifelong learner, Bill returned to college to study electronics and economics, demonstrating his dedication to personal growth. With a steadfast moral compass—often interpreted as stubbornness—he embraced a life filled with adventure and a deep appreciation for freedom. His passion for travel took him around the world, from Japan to Greenland, but he ultimately chose to return to Nebraska during his final months. Bill found a supportive community in Afton, Wyoming, where he spent several years before returning to Chadron, Nebraska. He cherished the camaraderie of his neighbors, enjoyed lunch outings at the senior center, and connected with fellow veterans. An avid follower of current events, Bill relished spirited debates, showcasing his engaging personality. Even in his later years, he maintained a routine centered on physical activity and the great outdoors, despite no longer being able to run long distances.
Bill is survived by his brothers M. Dale Saunders (Marie), Charles, and David (Frances) Saunders, as well as a host of nieces and nephews: Pam Saunders, Rusty Saunders, Dan Saunders, Lori Foss, Kathy Davis, Bill Saunders, and Sonja Dressel. He was preceded in death by his parents, Milton and Ruth Saunders, his brother Jerold and sister -in-law, Rose, and his niece, Susan Dudley.
