Wilma Sherrill

August 4, 1938 — May 3, 2023

Memorial services for Wilma Jo Wolfe Sherrill of Chadron will be held at the Chadron Church of Christ at 502 Mears St in Chadron NE on Monday, May 29, 2023 at 10:00 AM with a luncheon following. Date and time are pending at this time.

Wilma was born on August 4, 1938 in Ainsworth, Nebraska, the only child of Joseph Albert Wolfe and Ruby Gladyce Genung Wolfe. She passed into the arms of her Savior on May 3, 2023.

Wilma was raised on a ranch south of Wood Lake, Nebraska and was especially fond of her horses and dogs and loved helping her parents as they worked on the ranch. She graduated from Ainsworth High School in 1956 and obtained a teaching certificate and taught near Springview the following year. She met her future husband, Frederick John Sherrill during that time and they were married December 27, 1957. To this union, four children were born: Teresa Jayne, Donald Warren, Rhonda Leah and Eileen Lynn. Wilma traveled to and lived in many areas, following her US Air Force (and later US Coast Guard) husband to his assignments including Hawaii, Germany, Arizona, Louisiana, California, and Florida, and often returned to her beloved Nebraska during times that took Fred overseas. After their divorce in 1972 she moved to Chadron to pursue her teaching degree so she could return to the classroom, graduating with a BS in Elementary Education in 1978 with a minor in Art. She taught in country schools in Bayard, Ainsworth, O’Neill and Wood Lake over the next dozen or so years. She was an artist from the time she was a child and continued to pursue that skill in many mediums, especially oil paintings and pencil drawings. She became a nanny in 1991 and remained in that position until she was severely injured in a fall in 1998 and had to retire. She then returned to Chadron to be near family. She loved working with children and continued to help as an RSVP Grandparent at Headstart in Chadron. She loved sewing and crafting and spent many happy hours creating gifts for friends and family and the Senior Center in Chadron.

She was preceeded in death by her parents, Joe and Ruby Wolfe. She is survived by her four children and their spouses – Teresa (Larry) Landreth, Don (Paula) Sherrill, Rhonda (Bob) Norris, and Eileen Jackson; her eight grandchildren - Amy (Matt) Ormseth, Curtis (Mikel) Landreth, Brenna Sherrill, Ken Norris, Nichole Beames, Deandra Norris, Devereaux Jackson and Elyas Jackson, and by her eight great-grandchildren - Tyler, Jacob and Payton Ormseth, Xander and Kennedy Beames, Brayden and Emmerson Landreth and Catalina Norris.
