Funeral services for Doug Elwess of Chadron, Nebraska will be held on Tuesday, January 26, 2021 at 10:00 AM at Chamberlain Chapel in Chadron, Nebraska with Dr. Russ Seger officiating. Burial and military honors will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Chadron, Nebraska. Livestreaming of the funeral service will be available on the Chamberlain Chapel Facebook page. A visitation will be held on Monday, January 25, 2021 from 5:00-7:00 PM at Chamberlain Chapel in Chadron, Nebraska.

Leonard Douglas Elwess “Doug”, 88, passed away on January 20, 2021 at his home in Chadron, Nebraska. He was born on February 23, 1932 in Sheridan County, Nebraska, to Adam Leonard and Hulda Louise (Reeves) Elwess.

He joined the United States Army and served in Korea. On February 18, 1955, Doug married Thelma Mae Pettigrew and to this union they had four children. After the military, Doug worked as a meat cutter, worked for several farmers and ranchers, then worked for the State of Nebraska Department of Roads, then had a dairy for several years and owned Chadron oil Company. Doug retired as a farmer/rancher.

Doug was a member of the American Legion and VFW.

Doug loved his family and church. He was a hard worker and always willing to help out anyone. He would always call or visit if he heard someone was hurt or sick. No one could jitterbug like Doug.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Thelma Mae (Tiny); Daughter Laura Sue Elwess of Malcom, NE; Son Delwin Douglas (Karla) Elwess of Chadron, Nebraska; Son Leonard Loree (Patty) Elwess of Keyes, California; Daughter Gwendolyn Kay (Bruce) Dobberstein of Chamberlain, South Dakota. Sister Connie Kay Colson; Brother Samuel Lee Elwess; Sister Dixie Diane Mooney; Brother David Earl Elwess. 12 Grandchildren, 11 Great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his parents Adam Leonard and Hulda Louise Elwess; Twin sisters Shirley and Charlotte Elwess; Sister Juanita Joyce Griswald; Brother Marvin Neil Elwess; Sister Carolyn Joy Serrat; Sister Gloria Arlene Cronan; Brother Howard Lyle Elwess; Sister Lois Anne Bezanson; and Sister Vera Louise Franck.

A memorial has been established for the Chadron Volunteer Fire Department. Donations can be sent to Chamberlain Chapel, PO Box 970, Chadron, NE 69337.
